Proteins

PROTIENS are found in animal and plant sources and are made up of amino acids (building blocks) needed for growth, maintenance and repair of tissues, organs, blood, hair/nails. They are key in many vital bodily functions-for example, amino acids can build enzymes that facilitate many metabolic functions or they may form antibodies that are part of the immune response or they may become part of clotting factors that promote healing etc.

They may also be used as a source of energy (especially by cats who are true carnivores). Proteins are made up of "essential" (must be provided in the diet) and "nonessential" (can be made in the body) amino acids.

Proteins vary in quality. A high quality protein contains all of the essential amino acids and comes from animal sources. Proteins from plant sources are usually incomplete and must be combined to provide the full compliment of essential amino acids.
